e.sacco is a cloud management system for Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations. It is built and operated by PledgePay Uganda Limited, a registered Ugandan software company based in Kampala.
SACCOs are how millions of people in Uganda actually save and borrow. Market vendors, boda riders, farmers, teachers and students pool their savings and lend to one another at rates a commercial bank will not offer them. They are among the most important financial institutions in the country, and the majority of them still run on paper.
Hand-written counter books get lost, damaged and altered. Balances are added up by hand. Loan schedules are estimated rather than calculated. A member who wants to know what they have saved must travel to the office and ask someone to look it up. Meanwhile the software built for banks is priced for banks, needs servers and IT staff, and does not model the things a cooperative actually runs on — share capital, guarantors, and group accountability.
We built e.sacco to close that gap: a complete SACCO system that runs on ordinary, inexpensive hosting, works on the phones people already own, and costs a cooperative less to run in a year than a single month of commercial microfinance software.
Member records with full KYC, savings, share capital, loans with amortised repayment schedules, arrears and portfolio-at-risk tracking, income and expenses, receipts, and reports — including the gender-disaggregated reporting regulators and funding partners ask for.
A mobile app where a member can check their savings and share balances, follow their loan and repayment schedule, download a statement, apply for a loan, record deposits and repayments, and message their SACCO directly — without travelling to the office.
This system holds other people’s savings, so it is built to be accountable rather than merely convenient:
We are a record-keeping and management system. Except where a SACCO enables an integrated payment provider, e.sacco does not itself hold, move or transmit funds — money is handled by the cooperative through its own channels, and recorded here.
